No Man Is An Island

人類雖被譽為群居動物, 然而手機氾濫成災, 城中人盡變低頭一族, 人類一下子變得冷漠與疏離, 有如孤島。人與人之間貌似相隔咫尺, 實則活在虛擬世界, 心神相隔何止千里! 難道人類真的走上了不歸之路?

人類只有互相關愛, 同心扶持才能團結和興旺, 生命才得以延續。自我孤立只有步向滅亡。

十七世紀英國玄學派詩人(metaphysical poet) 約翰•鄧恩 (John Donne) 有一名篇＜Devotions Upon Emergent Occasions＞, 其中一節廣為傳誦。 詞章簡潔而語重心長, 充滿人本主義, 道出人類原是息息相關, 絕非孤島。

No man is an island,  人非孤島,
Entire of itself,  可以自成一體。
Every man is a piece of the continent,  每個人都是大洲的一小塊,
A part of the main.  整體的一部份。
If a clod be washed away by the sea,  要是海水沖走了一塊泥巴,
Europe is the less.  歐洲就要變小,
As well as if a promontory were.  這於海岬如是,
As well as if a manor of thy friend's  你朋友的莊園如是,
Or of thine own were:  於你自己的亦然:
Any man's death diminishes me,  任誰的死亡都是我的損失,
Because I am involved in mankind,  因為我跟人類息息相關,
And therefore never send to know for whom the bell tolls;  因此, 別問我喪鐘為誰而敲,
It tolls for thee.  它就為你而鳴。
